NYS PTA presented 2009’s Legislation/Education
Conference “Take New Steps Toward Advocacy” from February 28th-March 1st
in Albany.
PTA members from across the state gathered to learn the many ways to
become a proactive partner within their schools, to sponsor and support
both local and regional issues and truly make a difference for all
children.
The weekend session was highlighted by a keynote address from US
Congressman Paul Tonko (D-21). Congressman Tonko spoke to the group
about the federal stimulus package, the status of both federal and state
education aid, and what effect the state budget will have on local
school districts.
Also featured were Donna Bradbury and Douglass Bailey from the NYS
Office of Mental Health, who spoke about “Helping Parents and Children
Deal with Emotional & Behavioral Needs.”
“Simple Ways to Integrate Environmental Issues in Your School” were
addressed by Meg Morris of the Covanta Energy Corporation.
Parents, teachers and community members received information and
training about a number of topics throughout the weekend, meeting face
to face with issues experts in areas including: instruction on how to
write a resolution, after school programs, middle school issues,
environmental education, Response to Intervention, Virtual Lobby Day,
and engagement of parents & families in schools.
Members left the session feeling energized and more prepared to advocate
back home, at the grass-roots level. Said Bev Cottrell, NYS PTA
Parenting & Family Life Chairman, of the many educational issues facing
parents today “It’s like a puzzle. Everybody has to work together to put
it together.”
