Governor Proclaims October "Parent Involvement in Children's Education Month"

Albany, NY  October 12th, 2008 – New York State Governor David A. Patterson announced last week that October has been declared, “Parent Involvement in Children’s Education Month.” (PDF document)

NYS Assistant Secretary for Education, Mark Leinung, made the announcement to more than 100 high-level community and educational leaders from across New York State who were gathered at the first ever “On the Same Page” Summit for Family Engagement in Education.  The summit was presented by the New York State Parent Teacher Association (PTA), Parent Information and Resource Centers of New York (PIRC), and EPIC-Every Person Influences Children.

Governor Patterson’s proclamation recognizes that “the future depends on today’s youth who will become tomorrow’s leaders, and that a sound education is key to producing the next generation of successful, productive and conscientious citizens.”   In the field of educational research, studies have continually shown that there is a direct correlation between high student achievement and family involvement in a child’s learning.  The  proclamation goes on to stress the importance of “creating an environment where learning takes place not just in the classroom – but becomes a central part of family life.”

“For 112 years, the New York State Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has been advocating for the education, health and welfare of New York’s children,” stated NYS PTA President Maria DeWald.  “Our membership, now at more than 355,000, has always recognized that parents and families can truly make a difference in a child’s academic success.  Today we recognize the value of parent involvement and all of the countless volunteer hours that parents give to their communities.  Our children are our future.”

The Governor’s declaration of October as “Parent Involvement in Children’s Education Month” solidifies the NYS PTA’s efforts to recognize the value of parent involvement and all of the countless volunteer hours that parents give to their communities.
