Governor Proclaims October "Parent Involvement in Children's Education Month"

October 12th, 2008 –

Assistant Secretary for Education, Mark Leinung, made the announcement
to more than 100 high-level community and educational leaders from
across New York State who were gathered at the first ever “On the Same
Page” Summit for Family Engagement in Education.
The summit was presented by the New York State Parent Teacher
Association (PTA), Parent Information and
Governor Patterson’s proclamation recognizes that “the
future depends on today’s youth who will become tomorrow’s leaders, and
that a sound education is key to producing the next generation of
successful, productive and conscientious citizens.”
In the field of educational research, studies have continually
shown that there is a direct correlation between high student
achievement and family involvement in a child’s learning.
The proclamation goes
on to stress the importance of “creating an environment where learning
takes place not just in the classroom – but becomes a central part of
family life.”
