Convention 2009 Wrap-up:
The 113th New York State PTA Convention held in
Saratoga Springs, New York, on November 13-15, 2009, was attended by
delegates from throughout the state; they were eager to participate
in the opportunity to conduct the business of the association, learn
from workshops and listen to knowledgeable keynote speakers.
As one of its keynote speakers the Convention featured Dr. David
Steiner, NYS Commissioner of Education, who shared his goals and
ideas for enhancing education in New York State. Dr. Oliver
Robinson, President of the NYS Council of School Superintendents,
shared his passion for equitable educational opportunities for all
children. National PTA’s CEO Byron Garrett, delivered an inspiring
address at the banquet. Authors and filmmakers O’Donnell and
Belliveau educated attendees on their journey to retrace the
adventures of Marco Polo.
The Convention also featured student entertainment from the Saratoga
area, including the Saratoga Springs High School Chamber Orchestra,
the Queensbury High School Madrigal Singers and the Handbell Choir
from Whitehall High School.
Attending delegates were able to choose from twenty-three workshops
and training opportunities, as well as visit over seventy exhibitors
during the three-day weekend. One of the highlights of the
Convention was the adoption of twenty-three resolutions, which will
become part of the official positions of the association.
All delegates left Saratoga Springs with a renewed commitment to
continue the important work of the New York State PTA - advocating
for all children and youth of not only our individual communities,
but for children throughout our state and nation.
