PARP Award

Due Date:

Postmarked by June 15 to the PTA Region Director

Purpose:

The primary objective of this program is to encourage reading and other literacy-based activities in the home through PARP programs by:
* Giving recognition to outstanding PARP programs
* Sharing outstanding PARP ideas with other PTAs, schools, and libraries
* Contributing to the understanding of the importance of reading and other literacy activities in the home

Eligibility:

Individual PTA units in good standing, individual schools, and individual public libraries may apply for the Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) Award.

Application:

Applications must be postmarked (not metered) on or before June 15. No faxes or email transmissions will be accepted. Submit applications to the PTA Region Director.

Region PTA winners will be notified of the State PARP Award winner by September 1. Groups may not win either the Region or State Award in more than two consecutive years.

Selection Criteria:

The award will be granted to the group that has conducted the most outstanding Parents As Reading Partners Program during the current school year. All programs must encourage cooperative reading between parents and children for a minimum of fifteen minutes a day, and the overall program must include the words “Parents As Reading Partners”.

The selection committee reviewing the applications is particularly interested in programs that encourage and educate parents and other adults in the parental role about the importance of family reading activities. The committee is also looking for easy to reproduce programs which can be accessible and affordable to all communities. Programs might include such activities as:
* Providing parents and other adults with information to help their children become better readers and about fun and easy ways to add reading to their family life
* Organizing reading activities that families can participate in together
* Conducting cooperative projects between the home, school, public library, and community
* Involving family members as active participants in reading activities
* Involving parents and other adults in the parental role as active participants in all aspects of the program

A Region PTA PARP Award is presented in each of the 16 PTA regions. From among these 16 winners, one State PARP Outstanding Program is chosen by the PARP Committee of the New York State PTA. A special PARP plaque and $200 toward expenses to attend convention is presented at the annual State PTA Convention to the State winner.

Region PTAs are encouraged to recognize their winner at their fall conference or “Presidents and Principal’s Dinner”.

NOTE

Region PTA winners are encouraged to provide a display at the next region meeting in their area. The State winner is encouraged to attend the New York State PTA Convention to be recognized and receive a plaque during a special award presentation. The award-winning program will also become the PARP Resource Book Supplement and will be distributed at NYS PTA PARP events.

Each year the NYS PTA PARP Awards Committee chooses a winner of the New York State PTA Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) Award. The PARP program encourages students to read in a fun and exciting manner. It can involve not only parents and students, but teachers, staff, school board, librarians and local community leaders. In addition, a motivating program can inspire an entire school community.

Is there a Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) program in your community? Encourage someone familiar with the program to apply for the New York State PTA PARP Award. The Application will become available below in January or by contacting your Region Director or calling the NYS PTA office at 1-877-5NYS PTA and requesting a copy be mailed to you.

Please be sure to adhere to the June 15 postmarked deadline to your Region Director in order to be included in the region selection of their winning application. Following the region judging each region sends their winning entry to the state committee for the selection of the state winner.

The postmarked deadline is June 15, and the application must be sent to your Region Director.
