The Family Engagement in Education Act of 2011

On April 14th, The Family Engagement in Education Act of 2011 was introduced in the US House by Representatives Platts and McCarthy and in the Senate by Senators Reed and Coons. The Family Engagement in Education (FEE) Act strengthens parent engagement in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), commonly referred to as No Child Left Behind (NCLB), which Congressional leaders have stated they want to reauthorize this year.

The bill:

· provides guidance and incentives to schools, districts, and states on how to use research-based strategies to engage families
· strengthens and safeguards the sole federal parent engagement program, the Parental Information and Resource Centers (PIRCs).

Text of the legislation and the official summary can be located at: place our link here?

This bill is PTA’s top policy priority, and we are thrilled that after months of work and advocacy, a sound legislative proposal that authorizes no new federal spending is finally introduced in both chambers! Your State PTA leaders have worked with National PTA over the course of this process. While an action alert will be sent following introduction, we need your help to ensure that this bill makes an impact with House and Senate committees as they consider ESEA reauthorization.

National PTA is in the process of collecting endorsements from national, state, and local organizations. Of course, NYS PTA would like as many PTAs as possible represented in this effort. Every state and DC PTA endorsed the FEE Act last Congress. Programmatically, the bill has not changed. *Please note: National PTA strongly recommends endorsement*

Your state PTA is signed on and is requesting that you forward the information in this email along to your local units/councils. Encourage them to sign on to the bill and send this to community partners. We would like to include as many PTA units and partners as endorsers as possible. Feel free to pass along the link to the text and summary and please instruct local units/councils to endorse by clicking the below link (it can be copied and pasted into any email):
